Etched in Memories and Hearts

Dr. Esther Cheung had joined the Department since 1999 and served as Chairperson for seven years. She was known for her dedication to teaching and unwavering efforts to inspire interests in the study of Hong Kong culture. As a prolific poet and essayist, Dr. Cheung was a familiar face in the local cultural scene and her departure was a great loss to many. In honour of her commitment to academic rigour, Dr. Cheung’s husband Prof. Thomas Au established a memorial prize for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Department. Having nurtured numerous students and pioneered meaningful projects and courses, Dr. Cheung remains a beloved soul of the Department.
